There's not really a catch to downloading free fonts. This is completely legal (assuming the downloadee is has license to do so). However, there are pros and cons to be aware of when downloading free fonts:

  Pros:

• They're FREE! :)

• Often lower quality
• May not support all characters
• May be created by amateurs
• Possibly a hook by the creators to get you to eventually buy other fonts they produce (which is not necessarily a bad tactic)

Many font sites allow you to download free TTF (True Type fonts, aka "truetype" fonts) files as well as Open Type, Postscript and raster fonts. Not only that, but you're going to find a lot of cool fonts: script fonts, calligraphy fonts (quill lettering fonts), handwriting fonts, gothic fonts, cursive fonts, sans fonts, serif fonts, hebrew fonts, greek fonts, roman fonts, arabic fonts, celtic fonts, font symbols and just about any other style you can think of...even your typical normal fonts.
